Shockwave therapy

Shockwave therapy is used in multiple disciplines, including physiotherapy, orthopaedics, sports medicine and urology. Its main benefits are fast pain relief and mobility restoration. Since it’s a non-surgical therapy with no need for painkillers, it’s an ideal therapy to speed up recovery and cure various conditions or injuries causing acute or chronic pain.
What is Shockwave therapy?
A shockwave is an acoustic wave that carries high energy to painful spots and myoskeletal tissues that have acute and chronic conditions. The energy in shockwave therapy promotes regeneration and reparative processes of the tendons, bones, and other soft tissues.
Common conditions treated
Shockwave therapy has been shown to effectively treat various conditions, including:
- Elbow – tennis and golfer’s elbow
- Feet – plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, achilles tendonitis
- Knee – patellar tendonitis
- Hip – bursitis
- Lower leg – shin splints
- Upper leg – Iliotibial band friction syndrome
- Shoulder – rotator cuff muscles or calcific tendinitis of
- Back pain – lumbar and cervical spine regions and chronic muscle pain
The benefits of shockwave therapy
Some of the benefits of shockwave therapy treatment:
- It’s a non-invasive solution for chronic and acute pain in many areas of the body
- No anaesthesia or drugs are required
- There are limited side effects
- It can restore function
- Fast treatment: Treatment sessions are only 20 minutes long
What to expect
First, we will need to conduct a full clinical assessment of your condition to determine if shockwave therapy is an appropriate treatment for you. If appropriate, a course of shockwave therapy is typically three sessions a week apart alongside prescribed exercises and advice on pain management.
Initially, we will apply a contact gel to the area of pain. The shockwave treatment device is then applied onto and moved over the affected area. The shockwaves are then transmitted through the skin into the injured area. The effects of the shockwaves will provoke your body to respond to this controlled trauma by increasing blood circulation and triggering stem cell activation and enzyme production in the injured tissue, which promotes and accelerates healing and reduces pain.
