What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy involves the holistic approach to the prevention,diagnosis and therapeutic management of pain, disorders of movement or optimisation of function to enhance the health and welfare of the community from an individual or population.

At the core of physiotherapy is the patient’s involvement in their own care through education, awareness, empowerment and participation in their treatment.

When do I need physiotherapy?

You may need physiotherapy if you have chronic pain or an injury that affects how you function every day.You may also need physiotherapy after surgery.

What to expect at your appointment

We’ll first start with a very thorough examination. Alewyn will begin by asking you questions about your condition. It’s important for you to be honest and open so that we can plan the most effective treatment plan.

The next step will involve you getting up and moving around so we can assess your movements. You will be evaluated on your:

  • Strength
  • Flexibility
  • Range of motion
  • Posture
  • Mobility
  • Balance
  • Coordination
  • Skin integrity
  • Muscle function

You will also be prescribed certain treatments, such as exercises, shockwave therapy, spinal mobilisation and manipulation. The treatments will likely be carried out in the second and subsequent sessions.
